Citizenship and Naturalization
Here are the steps you need to take to naturalize in the United States:

Step 1: Confirm Your Eligibility

Before you begin the naturalization process, you must confirm that you are eligible for citizenship in the United States. This includes meeting certain residency and time requirements, having a basic understanding of English, and passing the U.S. citizenship test.

Step 2: Complete Form N-400 and Gather Required Documents

Once you confirm your eligibility, you need to complete Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, and provide additional documents requested in the form. It is important to ensure that you are submitting photocopies of original documents when submitting your forms.

Step 3: Submit Your Application and Pay Fees

Submit your application packet to the USCIS office and pay the filing fee. This fee covers your biometrics fee as well.

Step 4: Attend Your Biometrics Appointment

After submitting your application, you will receive a fingerprinting appointment scheduled approximately 1 month later. Be sure to bring your original ID documents with you.

Step 5: Attend the Naturalization Interview

After your fingerprinting appointment, the citizenship interview may be scheduled anywhere between 9 to 14 months later. During the interview, a USCIS officer will review your application and test your English proficiency and knowledge of U.S. government and history.

Step 6: Take the U.S. Citizenship Test

The US citizenship test includes an English proficiency test and a civics test. The English proficiency test is meant to determine your ability to participate in social aspects of life in the United States. The civics test evaluates your understanding of basic U.S. history and how the government functions.

If you are worried about your knowledge of the English language or the civics test, an English as a Second Language or Citizenship preparation courses can help you prepare for your exam and interview. The USCIS also provides study materials to help you prepare for the Citizenship Test.

Step 7: Wait for a Decision and Complete the Oath of Allegiance

After completing your interview and passing the U.S. citizenship test, you will wait for a decision. If approved, you will need to complete the Oath of Allegiance and receive a Certificate of Naturalization.
